Lesson
Development
An e-learning, or on-line training, curriculum consists of a structured set of
lessons, typically delivered through a Learning Management System (LMS). An
individual lesson, which represents approximately one hour of training
time, can be evaluated, tracked, and recorded through a Learning
Management System (LMS) or may be for the learner’s self-evaluation only.
Based on the instructional design
requirements, there are several types of lessons that can be identified
for development, such as Custom Lessons,
Evaluations or Assessments, Case
Studies, Simulation Exercises, and
Enhanced Presentation Broadcasts.
Custom Lessons
Custom lessons are developed from custom
content that is captured from client-supplied documents and through the
facilitation of subject matter expert(s). These on-line, or computer
based training, lessons are typically used as a strategy to reinforce
procedural learning and to educate a wide audience using consistent
content. These lessons traditionally have text describing a sequence of
steps accompanied by appropriate media elements to support the learner’s
comprehension and facilitate different learning styles.
Interactive elements, such as media
highlighting that links graphical information to the text, hyperlinked
glossary items, and quiz/assessment questions, can be included in a
custom lesson to enhance the learner’s comprehension of the training
content.

Evaluations or Assessments
An interactive standalone evaluation or assessment is a special lesson that
evaluates the learner’s comprehension of the training content and
typically consists of a series of true/false or multiple-choice
questions. Popup text interacts with the learner to indicate if their
choice is correct and provides feedback.
An evaluation or assessment can be created to support each custom lesson in the
on-line training curriculum. In a blended e-learning approach, an
evaluation can also be created to support other elements in an overall
training curriculum, such as pre-existing on-line lessons or training
that is offered off-line (i.e. instructor-led training or reading a
book, etc.).
Case Studies
A case study is a special lesson that reinforces your understanding
of the lesson material using a scenario-based presentation and
interactive questions. A scenario is outlined for the learner and at key
stages in the case study, the learner must answer a question correctly
to continue to the next page. Popup text interacts with the learner to
indicate if their choice is correct and provides feedback.

Simulation Exercises
A simulation exercise is a special lesson containing interactive
pages that allow learners to practice procedural steps in a simulated,
non-threatening environment. A typical example is practicing steps
required in a software program. Each step allows multiple attempts to
complete the instructions before proceeding to the next step. On
unsuccessful attempts, additional instructions are provided as feedback
to the learner.

Enhanced Presentation Broadcasts
A Presentation Broadcast captures a presentation event, complete with
audio, and converts it into a web-based format for delivery. This allows
convenient viewing of the presentation to a wide audience. A
Presentation Broadcast can be enhanced to include additional media
elements.
